Canelo Alvarez, the world’s top-ranked pound-for-pound boxer according to ESPN and The Ring magazine, will look to become undisputed super middleweight champion when he fights IBF champion Caleb Plant on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nev. The fight will be televised on Showtime pay-per-view. 

Alvarez, who holds the WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring titles, last fought in May when he defeated Billy Joe Saunders by referee technical decision to win the WBO belt. Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) is on a seven-fight win streak dating to his majority decision win over Gennady Golovkin in September 2018. He is looking to become an undisputed champion for the first time.

Plant, who has held the IBF title since January 2019, has successfully defended the belt four times, with his latest victory coming by unanimous decision over Caleb Truax in January. This will be the first pay-per-view bout of Plant’s career. 

Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) said the fight is “personal” after a prefight skirmish between the pair. 

“Anytime someone is standing across from me, trying to ruin everything that I worked for and dreamed of and sacrificed my life to obtain — you know, to me that’s personal,” he said in an interview with Nashville Scene. “It just seems to me like (Alvarez) lost his cool, and for some reason I’m under his skin.”

Alvarez is returning to the Las Vegas area for the first time since November 2019, when he defeated Sergey Kovalev by knockout for the WBO light heavyweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Alvarez is making his ninth appearance at the Grand Garden Arena, where he has posted a 7-1 record. The only loss of his career came at the arena against former pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013. 

Alvarez has also fought five times at T-Mobile Arena, which hosted his two fights against Golovkin. His most recent fight there were was a unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs in May 2019. 

Plant is making his third appearance in the Las Vegas area. His last fight there was in July 2019 against Mike Lee. He successfully defended his IBF title for the first time with a technical knockout.
